PLAIN comics!

I thought I'd take a second and show a more substantial update to PLAIN comics and talk about where things are at. First I've started to collaborate with a friend -- Charlie Olson -- to untangle the ball of knotted yard that was my JavaScript and knit it into a steel piece of machinery. So far it is working well and as it advances we'll start asking others to try it out. For now though check out the program in action. Also here's a consolidated version of the first several pages of Space Monster! Space Ships! -- which all run in the kind of "3"d you can see above.
And then again I pulled up the intro to Louisiana Purchased, you can see the art from the first non-preface page running in the second video.

It's a much nicer photo than I've ever managed.

PLAIN COMICS, IT'S ON THE HORIZON.

I was hoping to launch Plain Comics a few days ago, but I'm going to postpone a little further, because while much of the art is ready, a lot of my code for it is not. I do have a friend involved now who is much better at the technical side of things than myself, and am positive that I'll have an official announcement for everyone by the end of the month.

In the meantime:

Here's an in progress page from Louisiana Purchased...

Plain Comics Update

I am -- having had a slight production issue (resolved) with a piece of furniture in a show opening tonight --pushing back the release of plain comics a week or two. I'm going to keep posting progress here in the meantime.

Louisiana Purchased characters

Little scale study.

Comics from about 2 years ago

These are old, and problematic, but I realized that not only were their preview images gone from this blog but so was the secondary blog they linked to. I thought it might be a good idea to collect them all somewhere (though all is wrong because there's a couple panels that have disappeared from SS!SM! for maybe ever).

To preface them a little bit I'll say that I'd draw an issue every weekend when I was in my first year at Cranbrook (and sometimes that meant friday evening, and monday morning, and tuesday morning). The goal was to make work fast and to be flexible about it. Wanting to them to take on the feel of reading silver age adventure comics at my grandparents as a child I juggled multiple story lines.

It's funny to look back at them -- even being only a few years old -- they don't strike me as perfect, or good, but I think there's a lot in there that is useful to see again. Also the two main comics that I'll start releasing under Plain Comics at the end of the month come from settings I started thinking about when I was making these. Those are Louisiana Purchased and Space Monsters! Space Ships! I flipped the name around! Freak City didn't make the cut because it dawned on me it was just 1920s X-men as sideshow freaks (the lady could grow a giant beard to fight with if you were wondering what was going on with her) and Time Crime, which only makes an appearance way way below, was really just an excuse to draw/write Steve. I did a warm up sketch of him the other day even.

Also, I'll try and fix it, but excuse the weird image breaks that have something to do with this stupid blogger template.

Ugh. These are a little teeth grinding. Sorry.

Here's a video of the first page of SM!SS! running in browser. Turns out you can take video of your desktop with quicktime so this one is not taken with my phone.

LP preface Slideshow, I hope

I thought I'd post this again, but in a way that's a little more like how the final version will appear. Also, still one lingering typo. Sorry.

Page 3 of Twice Naked and roughs of page 4

Preview of page 3...
The type's still at a rough stage. I'm still trying to make some design decisions in regards to type in these things. Mostly I am not going to use whatever script font I've downloaded for free. It'll probably be hand lettered, but that'll be one of the final things that plugs into the comics before the go live in a couple weeks.

Also here are the roughs on page 4 too, they are more... how do you say, rougher.

Re-do of that last page I posted

I'm not sure what made me think that last page seemed like even a remotely OK approach...

This one is better. Though it may still need something a bit further in the background. So not quite done.

Space Monsters! Space Ships! page one first draft

I'll post the next two pages tomorrow. And just to make sure everyone is on the same page (HA!) as me   these are all going to be collected -- in order -- on a new site at the end of the month. In the meantime I'm just going to be posting process and roughs -- Like this for instance.

Pieces of Twice Nude

Here are some unfinished frames from Twice Nude (Twice Naked?). Both the copy and drawings are not quite finished, but I'm trying to leave behind a record of progress for when everything goes live in a month (less now). I usually leave behind a decent record of my drawings as I go, but with writing much less so.

Space Monsters! Space Ships!

Here's a teaser Image for SM!SS! and some text to boot. Or is it "too" boot. Is the expresion about having too many boots? Anyway...

Recovered from low earth orbit the probe contained just three pieces of cargo.

An envelope of kidney stones, a dehydrated parasite of unknown origin, and the right hemisphere of a brain belonging to Algernon Rost -- famed exobiologist. It was inscribed with his brain diary.

What follows are his memories. They begin 1,000 years ago and cover the indeterminate* period of time that follows.

*Relativity!!!

Here's a few snippets from of Space Ships! Space Monsters! (now going to be Space Monsters! Space Ships!) and one from Freak City another older comic.

Plain Comics

I thought I'd share some of the other end of what I've been working on, and the plan for all of these small updates I've been posting. Hopefully as a result it'll be clear why it seems as if I've been dragging my feet on the drawing end of things.

At the end of September the web comics magazine Plain Comics (name pending) is going live. With features like above! and others!

It's going to launch with the following:

-Space Monsters! Space Ships! 5 strips (It's a re-hash of a series of strips I did a few years ago, but in 3D!)

-Louisiana Purchased 5 strips (one of which you've already seen a preview of)

-2 short stories (including twice nude, and a mystery story)

The format for the magazine is going to be three weekly updates, a strip of SM!SS! Mondays, a strip of LP Wednesdays, and a strip of a short story on Fridays.  Until then though I'm trying to get the formatting working and streamline the scripting process so while I'll post updates here before the website goes live I'll try not to give specific time estimates anymore. Instead I'll give one big estimate and say the site goes live in 30 days.

Exciting!

Also I'm going to post some of my older comic work (specifically from Space Monsters! Space Ships!) because I realized all my images have disappeared for some reason.

the Nude's Naked

I was hoping to have the first two pages of this up today and Louisiana Purchased #1 tomorrow, but it looks like I'm going to have to bump back by a day because I have a piece that needs to get sent off to a show soon. So the first two pages of this tomorrow and LP #1 tuesday instead of monday.

Louisiana Purchased Preface

The preface for Louisiana Purchased is up, the format is going to be slightly different when it makes it to the final website ( no scrolling) but for now here's a pretty good look at what's coming. Hopefully without too many typos.

Edit: fixed some typos and changed some of the script.

Comics AGAIN!

Tomorrow. That's the 24th Plain Comics Magazine goes live. I've been working on it since I finished school and it'll be an exceptionally soft launch, but I'm pretty excited. A link will follow early tomorrow.

The schedule is the reintroduction of Louisiana Purchased tomorrow, a short story in the evening that reveals the rough format of the strips, and the first official Louisiana Purchased Sunday afternoon, with the first five strips launching every other day for the following two weeks. I'm going to settle on a regular chronological window soon, but for now the plan is to get everything live and up at a regular pace, and then tweak from there.

It's not an official launch for the site and is really just a technical preview with a URL, but I thought if you're one of the two people who read this regularly you may want to take a peak as it comes together.

For now the URL will be mackenzieschubert.info

Shoot

I accidentally deleted my blogger template. It's now going to look like it does right now because fixing it is not a priority...

"priority" above is a link. But the color scheme for this new layout does not show it very well.

OCT through JAN sketches, minus DEC(ish)

My sketch stack starting in October and ending today. I left out December and early January because I used spiral bound notebooks that did not stack as well.

Three warnings:
• I didn't take anything out so it may be especially dull in places.
• There might be some swears in there.

• Most lists could have been made by an elementary school student. None were.

Art 21 Blog

Lindsay Preston Zappas interviewed me and a couple other students from Cranbrook for an Art21 blog article. If that's the sort of thing you think might be interested in.... it's here. Four of us sat around her house and talked over beer. It may have been a nightmare for her to transcribe, but the conversation was fun and expertly steered. The article does a fantastic job of capturing it.

I will preemptively warn you I'm not exactly a master conversationalist when it comes to speaking my words.
